GLOBAL READ ALOUD BOOK 2018

Dear Global Read Aloud participants,
It is hard to believe that as I write this, there are parts of the world just waking up to Monday, October 1st.  The day that marks the kick off to the 9th annual Global Read Aloud!  Over the next six weeks, more than 1.5 million kids will get to experience a read aloud.  From little kids who crowd around their teacher for story-time to all of those big kids who hope their teacher reads just one more page; soon our adventure begins.

Grade 7 Weekly Blogpost- Bucket List

Learning Goal:

Your task is to create your own bucket list (5 things) and post it on your blog. Please describe why you chose each item and insert an image.

Presentations begin on- TBD

Mr. Kaufman's bucket list

1. Visit Fiji- My wife and I have always wanted to travel to the beautiful country of Fiji. This will be difficult to accomplish as it is located on the other side of the world. As well, if I go on my summer vacation, the seasons are flipped making it their winter. If I travel across the globe, it better be ninety degrees. I have a confession, technically I have been to Fiji. For a whopping 30 minutes, I was sitting on the runway at Nadi International airport while our plane refueled on route to Brisbane, Australia. Family vacations are on the backburner until my daughter is a little older.

2. Play golf at St. Andrews- St. Andrews is often regarded as one of the oldest and most well-known courses worldwide. Many people refer to it as the "Home of Golf". I enjoy watching and playing golf. It is my dream to play at the "Old course" and walk across the Swilcan bridge which is located on the 18th hole fairway just like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and many other legends. Can you believe that on the seventeenth tee, you actually drive the ball over the edge of a hotel? Sounds dangerous!

3. Complete a Marathon- 42.195 Kilometers or 26 miles and 385 yards! To give you some perspective, the distance from our school to the Air Canada Center is about 50 Kilometers. I think it would be an amazing accomplishment to be able to run a Marathon. I'm not sure if the appeal of running a Marathon is it's one of the original Olympic events or that every year I'm curious to hear the winning time in the Boston Marathon. After I finish a 10 km run, all I think to myself is I have to run four times this distance to accomplish my goal. Small strides, but I know deep in my heart I can do it if I set my mind to it.

4. Write a weekly sports column- A typical Sunday morning would involve me drinking my coffee and scrolling through numerous newspaper articles and blog posts. The topic always the same: SPORTS. I think it would be fascinating to have people excited to read my weekly sports column. I think I would call it "Brian's Take"..... I've already decided that I would write on a variety of sports including my favorites golf, soccer and hockey. Maybe one day instead of rambling my thoughts to anyone who will listen I will actually write them down.

5. Watch the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford- The Manchester Derby is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. My wife says I say this countless number of times throughout the year but I would love to take this game in live at Old Trafford. Basically, if you live in Manchester, half of the city likes Manchester City (Blue) and the other half of Manchester likes Manchester United (Red)... When these teams meet, it's team vs team, supporters vs supporters, which leads to great entertainment. I guess the closest rivalry to the Manchester Derby in North American sports would be the Montreal Canadians versus Toronto Maple Leafs or the Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees.

6.  180, 180, 180, the announcer yells in his high-spirited British accent, the crowd goes wild, and the spectators hold up their '180' signs. Yes, I'm one of those people that watch professional darts on television.  The precision of their throws, simply amazes me.  I have been excruciatingly close to achieving this feat.  It takes three perfect throws, one after another into the small red zone in the top third of the board.  A score of '180' is the highest score you can achieve in the game of darts.  I'm confident that one day soon, I will be able to say I'm accomplished this goal of mine.

  • SOLVE a Rubrik's cube without the use Youtube

Math Homework

What is my number?  My tens digit is 3 more than my thousands digit.  My ones digit is 2 times my hundred digit.  My tens digit is 4 times the hundreds digit.  My tens digit is one more than 7.

I am a three-digit number. All my digits are odd numbers. My tens digit is the greatest of the three digits. My ones digit is 2 more than my hundreds digit. If you multiply me by 6, the estimated product is 3,600. What number am I?

How can you add eight 8's to get the number 1000?

Six Word Memoirs

Learning Goal:

  • write a six-word memoir and create a visual representation (photo/drawing/video)

http://www.sixwordmemoirs.com/schools/

  • what surprises you about this form of writing?
  • what were some of the common themes that emerged from the writing?
  • what emotions are revealed through these six-word memoirs? Which words make you feel those emotions?
  • what do you think is the backstory for this author’s six-word memoir?

Writing Process:
  1. Reflect on events, themes, and memories (both good and bad) throughout your lives. You will consider what is most important to you and pick your idea to use as your Six Word Memoir theme.
  2. Create a word web of related words for your chosen theme: descriptive words, action words etc.
  3. Begin writing your first draft (consider the use of capitals, punctuation etc.)
